What is Heart Disease?

Heart disease refers to several types of heart conditions and occurs from the buildup of plaque in the arteries, which reduces (or blocks) blood flow to the heart.

Heart disease may be “silent” and not diagnosed until a person experiences signs or symptoms of a heart attack, heart failure, or an arrhythmia. However, many forms of heart disease can be prevented or treated with healthy lifestyle choices.

What’s Involved in Nutrition Counselling?

  • Education: We empower you with an understanding of how food, stress and daily lifestyle habits impact your heart health and blood lipids. Also, we offer follow-ups with more information and resources to support you.
  • Nutrition: Importantly, our dietitian breaks down the what, when and how much to eat for improving heart health. You receive individualized goals and recommendations that may include meal and snack ideas, portion targets, vitamin recommendations, product suggestions and education on label reading.
  • Physical activity and daily habits: Your daily routines and habits can help you better manage heart health, blood pressure and even lower stress. Therefore, supporting you with long-term, sustainable lifestyle change is our goal!

My dietitian immediately put me at ease and listened to my concerns and questions. Her analysis of food labelling was eye-opening and I put this knowledge to work every time I shop for food! She provided me with the tools I need to evaluate my eating patterns & how to improve them. Her encouragement and professionalism is very appreciated and I look forward to meeting with her again to gauge my progress.

After having so many negative food issues for most of my life, I wanted to redirect my thoughts from denying foods and feelings of guilt, to fueling my body properly for ultimate health. With my dietitian’s amazing guidance and knowledge, I achieved a new level of success in terms of my relationship with food and positive well-being. I am so appreciative of this new outlook!

I absolutely loved my dietitian consultations at Dietetic Directions! My Dietitian gave me practical goals each visit to help me focus on small changes for the better, and gave me suggested resources to educate myself further (the website is also a great resource for recipes). I wanted to make some lasting changes to my diet, and I didn’t know where to start. I was so pleased with how my dietitian helped me from feeling overwhelmed to feeling like “I can do this!”
